NETWORK OPERATIONS DATABASE

The NSMP Network Operations Database (NOD) facilitates the coordination of station, recorder, transducer, and inspection data with earthquake and record information. One of the key NOD capabilities permits replacement of the hard copy inspection form with a computer generated form; this allows direct entry of station inspection data into the database via 486 (MS-DOS-based) laptop computer. Floppy disks containing data from field offices are then mailed to the main office in Menlo Park, where the master database is regularly updated. Completed inspection forms can be printed on an as-needed basis either at field offices or in Menlo Park. Reports of various types can be generated in many different categories, such as station epicentral distance, list of stations by state or owner, or list of recorders by type; reports may be displayed on the screen or printed when a permanent copy is required. New types of reports are easily facilitated, and may be tailored to the specific needs of the individual or field office. NOD is a database application, running under Borland's relational database, PARADOX, Version 4.5 for MS-DOS. We plan to make the NOD available on the Internet to users of our data as soon as all files are scrutinized and information is verified.
